Adrija Dutta, a determined 19-year-old from Brahmapur, Boral, near Kolkata, embarked on a journey of hard work and dedication. Leaving her studies after high school, she joined Apni Kutir, Atabagan, aiming to financially support her family. Adrija enrolled in Kutir’s basic computer course and later in the Food & Beverages Training Course, eager to secure employment. Successfully landing a job at KFC’s Narendrapur outlet in September 2023, she now earns a monthly salary of Rs.10700/-. Adrija’s rapid progress and stellar performance, earning her two stars, impressed her managers, reflecting her resilience and commitment to family support and career advancement.

Taslima, a young girl from a Tiljala slum in Kolkata, faced societal taboos against education and work for girls in her orthodox minority family. Struggling with low self-confidence and communication difficulties, she defied her parents to enroll in Apni Kutir’s Mehendi course. Despite initial resistance, she attended classes and workshops, realizing that determination can overcome challenges. After completing the course, Taslima now receives Mehendi orders from customers across the city. Earning a satisfactory income, she has proven that with determination, one can overcome societal norms and achieve success, demonstrating resilience and self-sufficiency beyond the confines of her upbringing. “Kutir has helped me in understanding the true meaning of being independent and this has changed my outlook and mindset.”

Meet Talat, a reserved and introverted girl, always quietly observing life. Despite a supportive family, confidence eluded her. A turning point came when she joined Vartika ma’am’s group, finding courage in her journey. Talat, a graduate of Apni Kutir’s Beautician course, was intrigued by a dance and theatre group through a classmate. Now, she thrives as an artist in the Swabhav team, relishing acting lessons. Talat, once hesitant, now embraces the stage, aspiring for self-dependence. Her transformation is evident in her current role, where she earns Rs2400, marking not just financial gain but a personal triumph in overcoming introversion and pursuing her passions.

Kainat’s journey began in the challenging slums of Tiljala, Kolkata. Despite family pressure to marry at 16, her mother steadfastly championed her education. Post-secondary school, Kainat faced obstacles but found refuge in Apni Kutir, enrolling in English, computer, and Mpower courses. Initially shy and scared, she embraced the Apni Kutir, excelling in the Mpower course with grace. In 2022, she joined Meyeder Gaaner Dol, showcasing her talent in street plays and acting. Kainat, once unsure, now aspires to be an actor, embodying the essence of growth and professionalism as a remarkable success story and inspiration in her community.

Meet Kashmira Bibi, a middle-aged woman who once endured an abusive married life. Her life took a positive turn when she learned about Apni Kutir through a local mobilization drive. Kashmira enrolled in our sewing course, and during the training, she began assisting her husband, a tailor. This newfound skill proved beneficial for both of them. The positive impact has even influenced her husband, who now encourages Kashmira to continue the course and contribute further to their family business. The transformative journey showcases how empowerment through education can strengthen relationships and open doors to a brighter future. When we asked her about her feelings for kutir, she expressed,” Kutir is a place which gave me confidence to come out from an abusive relationship and gave me strength to change my husband”

Krishna Biswas comes from a family facing extreme poverty. Like many other girls in her situation, she got married young after finishing her studies. But life with her husband got tough, as he didn’t support her independence. Despite these challenges, Krishna is determined to make a better future for her daughter. She joined Kutir, completed a beautician course, and now offers beauty services from home. Krishna works hard and believes her husband will understand the importance of being self-reliant. Her story is about facing difficulties, staying determined, and turning obstacles into steps towards success. Kishna’s message was-’ Apni Kutir is my second home. I can share my heart out here and can be on my own.“

Milu Das, a tenacious 47-year-old, emerged from an underprivileged background, facing adversity at every turn. Despite societal barriers, she tenaciously pursued education, completing her graduation. Post-marriage, in a less-than-welcoming environment, Milu’s thirst for knowledge persisted. Discovering Apni Kutir, Atabagan, through an ex-trainee, she enrolled in a computer course, aspiring for self-sufficiency. Hindered by neglect and abuse in her in-laws’ home, Milu found empowerment within Apni Kutir. Apni Kutir became a sanctuary where she comprehended the essence of friendship, sharing, and freedom. Evolving from timidity, Milu now stands as a testament to resilience, her journey from hardship to success inspiring all. Milu adds,”I am very happy to be a part of this kutir as I get very relaxed after coming here”
